Hume admits ATK could have scored more goals

Iain Hume bagged a brace during Atlético de Kolkata’s 3-2 victory over Mumbai City FC in the first leg of the first semi-final of Hero Indian Super League 2016 at the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday. The Canadian striker scored both his goals in quick succession just before half-time to re-establish ATK’s lead after goals from Leo Costa and Gerson Vieira had cancelled out Lalrindika Ralte’s third-minute goal and handed Mumbai the advantage. Hume, who is Kolkata’s leading goal-scorer this year, netted his sixth and seventh goals of the season on Saturday evening. The 33-year-old spoke to indiansuperleague.com after the final whistle and shared his thoughts. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

What’s your take on the match?

The best 90 minutes we have played in the league so far, even though we gave away two sloppy goals from set-pieces, which is a dampener on the win. I think the team as a whole played very well and limited them [Mumbai] to minimal chances and nullified the threat of great players like Sunil Chettri, Cafu, Matias Defederico and Diego Forlan and going forward we created plenty of chances. Happy to score two goals, happy to get the win but disappointed as I feel we could have 3-4 goals more.

As you said you could have had a few more goals, so do you think you could have killed off the tie today itself?

We could have but if every striker converts every chance he gets, he would have been playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid, so I feel we must not focus on the negatives. I’m just happy to get two goals, one from open play and one from the penalty spot. Could have had a few more but Amrinder made an unbelievable save from my header. It’s a good win and sign for us to come away with a win. We have played the best team in the league and it is fair to say we have more than matched them and at times even bettered them. I’m just happy with the win and slightly disappointed about not getting a few more.

Do you think the tie is still open?

Yes, it is well and truly open, we know that. We are not going to go home and party and go clubbing and all that. We know it is just half-time in the tie against the best team in the league and we will have to go to Mumbai and put in a similar performance, if we are going to get to the final.

What are your views on the crowd tonight?

It was the best of the season by a mile, just disappointed it happened to be in the last game here. I know the people of Kolkata love ATK and love their football and we are happy to give them a good send-off in our last home game this season.
