Nirmal Chettri is a product of ‘search for more Baichung Bhutias’ scheme launched by the Sikkim government and initially was a striker at the Namchi Sports Hostel. Bimal Ghosh brought him to Mumbai and the doughty defender excelled as a teenaged stopper-back with Air India, which earned him a move to East Bengal where Trevor Morgan made him switch to right-back to fill in for an injured colleague with great success. The all-action defender loves to venture forward into opposition territory with incisive runs up the flanks. Chettri has risen from the ranks of India under-17 and under-23 to making the cut for the senior team with a fair degree of success. The attack-minded right-back has previously represented Kerala Blasters FC in the Hero ISL and will be looking to make more impact for NorthEast United FC in the 2016 ISL.
